[epub] Taking over a newsletter
From: David Carter <david@emgroup.com>

Hi Eva

>>By the way, great to hear from a long time
lurker. I hope that you will keep contributing
your opinions and suggestions in the future!<<

Thank you. As I am now a publisher myself, I'm sure I will be contributing
more to the list. I'll also be asking for advice - which is the reason for
this post :-)

I've recently taken over a newsletter from a couple of online friends of
mine. Basically they knew that I was keen on launching my own ezine, and
they had an ezine which they felt they could no longer devote the time to
, so it made good sense for both parties for me to take it over.

Unfortunately, I've had a "spamming" complaint from one of the subscribers
(totally unjustified - it's an opt-in list), or to be more accurate,
someone complained to my list host that I had spammed them. I think that it
was probably because the newsletter hadn't been published for four months
before I took it over and the person who complained had forgotten that they
were a subscriber.

I've gone to great lengths to explain to people that the ezine has changed
names and publisher in order to minimize the risk of this happening, and
basically I'm posting this in the hope that, if there's anything else I can
do , someone on epub will be kind enough to tell me.

When I published my first issue, I sent it from the original publisher's
address and with the original newsletter name, so that people would realize
that it was the latest issue of a newsletter they subscribed to.

The very first item in the newsletter was a message from the previous
publisher announcing that the newsletter would be taken over from me with
effect from that issue, and that the name would be changing.

I reminded people twice in the newsletter that it would be changing name,
and I also told them how to unsubscribe in two separate places.

The next issue I sent from my own address, but in the subject I put "Web
Essentials incorporating The Advance Newsletter" (that's the new and old
names) and I've also got that as the masthead at the moment.

I opened up with an editorial piece reminding people that the ezine had
changed name, and that they had only received it because they were either a
subscriber under the old name or had recently subscribed under the new
name (not that there are too many of the latter at the moment <g>)

I also told them how to unsubscribe twice ,and included a little privacy
policy statement explaining that the newsletter was opt-in only, that if
they felt they shouldn't have received it then "click here" to unsubscribe,
and that the names on the list would never be sold or rented to any third
party but would only be used to send them their copy of the newsletter.

I really don't see what else I can do to make people realize that they
actually are subscribers.

If I've missed anything, or if anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

Thanks

David Carter
