It sounds to me like you did everything you could other than maybe sending a 
separate mailing before publishing the first issue and asking those who 
wanted to *remain* on the list to respond.  

Of course, you probably would have lost quite a few subscribers this way, 
because a lot of people wouldn't have bothered to reply, but then the ones 
who did reply would really be targeted and interested in your ezine (as was 
mentioned in an earlier email about fewer subscribers, but better customers).

At one time, I changed names and e-mail addresses for my ezine, but my list 
was smaller then, so I didn't have any problems (thank goodness!).  And 
luckily, I've only had one complaint of "I didn't subscribe to this!" and it 
came directly to me, not my host, so I was able to handle it quickly.

People do forget they subscribe to things.  

I'd be interested to hear if others have had problems with "spamming" 
complaints and how you handled it.  Those with completely opt-in lists, that 
is (not the "you posted on my FFA page, so now you're MINE" lists -- LOL).
