Thanks, Azam for relating your experience.

I was interested because I add the majority of my subscribers personally.
They fill out a form on my site, then I add them to the list by hand.

I've used a mailto link in the past with terrible results. I've also used a
"confirmation" type of sign up -- terrible results (I know, I know -- less
subscribers, better customers <g>, but ... I have very few unsubs, so I came
to the conclusion that most people are just a little lazy maybe -- LOL). But
people don't seem to hesitate to fill out one form and have done with it.

I do make sure they receive a sample newsletter and an "official" welcome
within 24 hours of signing up, so they're not likely to forget that they
subscribed. And I have two ways for them to unsubscribe -- one of which is
simply to "reply" and type "remove" which has worked the best for the few
unsubs that I do get.

How do most of you handle subscribers? The "confirmation" way is probably
the safest as far as protecting yourself against "spamming" complaints. Have
you found that people DO confirm? When I was doing this; I only had around
10% who did confirm; if I wrote a follow-up letter, explaining that I
couldn't add them until they responded to the "confirmation" e-mail, then I
would pick up around another 5%. But I was losing more people than I felt
comfortable with, so I went to the form & add-by-hand method.
