[epub] Newsletter promotion

I'm interested how effective is one way of newsletter promotion. I mean,
I've already put on my most visited pages image button about my newsletters
and forum. On some sites I saw that owners put some kind of pop-up window
where they ask visitors to subscribe. Also, this and technique for site
recommendation (for example when someone wants to go to ther site). How
effective is that? I know that people don't like when someone tells them
what to do. But, in marketing you must call people for action (example is
Click here on banners). Because of that I would like to hear from you what
do you think about it. Thanks.
