EPUB Archives [Thread Prev][Thread Next][Thread]RE: [epub] Mailing Limitations by Web Hosts?
From: "Lee Benson" <lee@cyberprosper.com> Hi Thomas, I can sympathize with your problem there buddy. I'm afraid the obvious had to happen - I changed web hosts. I run my newsletter from a small Perl script that I created. I run it from Telnet as a background process. It's pretty simple - it just takes a look at the subscribers.txt file, individually emails each of the users with the newsletter, and replaces $EMAIL in the message with their email address. The problem with my old host is that they had an annoying time limit on Telnet scripts. I could email around 300-400 people, then ZAP, my background process was disabled. And the worse thing is I couldn't recover where I left off. Not good, not good at all. Now I'm with a great web hosting company. Web-Sharx at http://www.web-sharx.net - they have NO time limits on scripts, so you can send as many emails as you wish without losing performance. The server is a Dual-PIII 500, has over 768mb ram and a super-fast OC-12 connection (soon to be upgraded to OC-48)... It's going to take a monster script to slow this baby down, so the process of simply emailing to your subscribers won't be affected whatsoever. (I don't want this to sound like an advert, but if you order from them tell them Lee sent you and you'll get a special discount). Anyway, the moral of this little story is don't let your web host slow you down. You don't have to put up with it, because you can get a quality web host for pennies a day. It might sound like a big step changing web hosts, but pick a quality company and they'll help you get set-up the same day. For your information, Web-Sharx set-up my account the same day so I was able to upload all of my files before InterNic had even transferred the domain. And Thomas, I know EXACTLY what you mean when you say it feels like no-one is listening to your questions and complaints... Pick a web-host that's in tune with your own needs. I chose Web-Sharx because the owner, Joe, is also an active Internet marketer who I speak with personally over ICQ - He understands the needs of the customer, and will do more than enough to meet those needs. Don't let some over-sized, under-supported company tell you what you need - let THEM know what YOU need. I hope you manage to sort your problem. Keep us informed on your progress. From: "Thomas Bihl" <tbihl@bizjunction.com> Hi All, It's been a while since I've posted but I have a question for other publishers. I know that some of you use lists like One-List, ListBot, etc. and some send your list out yourself. To the folks who send the list themselves, do you use your domain to mail the newsletters or your local ISP? I have been mailing my newsletter through my domain with an email client that can personalize the message and all of a sudden I can only get 10 to 12 newsletters out at a time. I have been sending my newsletter out for over a year now and until the last two weeks have had no problem. When I advised the my hosting company I received the following answer. > I have gotten a bit more info on what happens with the popauth.db. > Sendmail rebuilds this file every five minutes, so if you have a lot > of messages (or some really big messages) and you send out when > sendmail does it's thing you'll see these errors. > > There are several reasons why we don't like users sending out really > large mass mailings, first and foremost is the fact that it eats up > server bandwidth and resources when so many messages are pushed out at > one time. Second is that errors like this are bound to happen, we need > to keep the popauth database updated frequently to prevent spammers > from using/abusing our systems. Now, I agree with security to protect against spamming, but this host states a gig a day can be used and I haven't come close. I also advised them this had changed in the last two weeks yet that is not addressed. Do you feel sometimes that no one is listening to or reading your questions or complaints? Is anyone else have similar problems - any suggestions? I realize the obvious - change hosts.
