  I just joined the E-Pub list and I was glad to see this as a topic as
soon as I came on since I have a few questions concerning it. I am
building a website currently (www.davidshq.nu) and while most of the
information I know for a fact is in the Public Domain, have gotten the
rights to use it, or I wrote it myself I have gone to a few
Java/JavaScript/CGI/etc. sites which claim to be giving away *free
scripts*, the only problem is when I download some of the programs they
don't include any licenses in them however why else would they be on the
conservatory? I plan on posting a copyright notice on my page stating
that portions are copyright by myself and the rest by their respective
owners and that if anyone owns any of the material on this page they may
write me and I will remove it, etc. if they so wish. What I want to know
is if this is going to legally cover me? I have done my best to only go
to reliable legitimate sites but you never know. So in a court of law
would the defense that I did do my best to use only scripts freely
available hold up? Or any such defense? And what is the likelihood of
someone suing me instead of just asking me to remove the script? I work a
lot with out-of-date works but most of those I type in by hand and own
the works and know for a fact they are public domain but what about these
java?
