I don't know about UK copyright, but in the US, you own the copyright to
anything you produce from the very moment of its creation. Whether or not
you register that work with the US copyright office, you still own the
copyright. Should someone try to steal that work and claim it as their own,
and you had *not* registered - registering is not mandatory - it could be
difficult to prove yourself the original creator.

The point in these posts is that, if you send yourself an envelope and leave
that envelope sealed, should you ever need to prove that you are the
copyright holder, you could then produce that envelope - with postmark
intact - and *prove* yourself the copyright holder. That's where this
discussion started. However, as was noted, that isn't necessarily *proof* -
it's much better, if you're truly concerned about copyright protection, to
spend the $30 or so and register your work with the US Copyright office.

Mailing a letter with the work inside has nothing to do with the act of
copyright, it's simply a way to say "See, I have this unopened envelope
that's dated so many years ago and this *proves* that I had this work
first."
