I believe here in the States a patent is for 20 years.

Yep and is because a trademark search is required.  You can do this yourself 
but it is risky.......it's best to let an attorney who specializes to this 
and that is where the high cost comes in.  Back in the early 80's the average 
cost was about $1500.....lord knows what it is now!
