If it's OK with Brian, I've extracted the following from responses to
reader inquiries in previous issues of my ezine, Biz Bits:

I would suggest the first stop when looking to open a merchant
account be your local bank(s). The chances of being taken for a
ride are much slimmer than online. In Addition, should you
already have an account there, you won't need to worry about
volume ceilings or locking up funds in a deposit, plus you can be
certain of being treated as a real person rather than simply the
name attached to an account number. You're also likely to pay far
less, and perhaps best of all, if you have a problem, a few
minutes in the car will put you face to face with someone to sort
it out.

If you can't find a local bank willing to provide merchant
services, I suggest you visit http://www.merchantworkz.com/ for
comparisons of various services.

At http://www.merchantchecks.com/comparisonchart you can view a
printable chart comparing 34 different items to consider when
selecting a merchant. Although clearly promoting it's host,
MerchantChecks, it nevertheless serves as a useful guide to
hidden costs.

Though not suitable for goods that need to be shipped offline, or
where monthly billing is required, ClickBank at
http://www.ClickBank.com offer a comprehensive service that has
received favorable reports (though I suggest you calculate the
total cost involved). The following is taken directly from their
website:

"ClickBank enables you to accept payment without the expense or
delay associated with a regular merchant account. A one-time
$39.95 activation fee, and a $1 + 7.5% fee per sale. There are no
monthly fees. ClickBank also provides you with your own fully
integrated affiliate program. This allows you to make more sales
by harnessing the marketing power of ClickBank's network of over
20,000 affiliates."

Whilst on the subject, merchant account provider Todd Sumrall has
published a free ebook about fraud and chargebacks to merchants
who accept credit cards. The book also contains an interview with
a chargeback supervisor and an attorney who specializes in the
merchant account industry. You can download "Protect Your
Merchant Account From Fraud and Chargebacks"at Todd's site:
http://www.ez-creditcard.com (PC & Mac versions)

AND

It consists of the Beseen "Buy it" button, which the site owner
places adjacent to each item in their store. As I understand it,
clicking on the button will take the customer to a secure server
page at Beseen, pre-configured to take the order for the item
concerned. You don't require a merchant account and there is no
set up fee, with Beseen taking a commission on each sale instead.
Here's the URL: http://buyit.beseen.com/

Hope that helps.
