As someone coming from paid-sub print newsletters, I see two problems you'll 
encounter:
1.  Getting enough people to pay for an e-mail newsletter
2.  If you can solve #1, you'll need either an outside vendor or a 
subscription-fulfillment software package. You can probably handle it 
makeshift for six months, but then you should start with an advance renewal 
offer, and that's when anything makeshift becomes impossibly complex to 
handle without the right software. Recommend you check out the Newsletter & 
Electronic Publishers Assn. at newsletters.org. They can spare you a lot of 
mistakes in setting up billing series, renewal series, and subscriber 
promotions.
