Supposition: is this just a glut of surfers saying screwit and
letting
their mailboxes fill up or letting their internet access lapse?

I use ONElist so I'm talking about bounces from their end.  Every
Monday I go through the bounced subscribers for Homefires Hearth and
send them a letter telling them their acccount has bounced and
asking if they want to be reinstated.  Out of 25 or so I send each
week (we have over 3000 subs now), 90% come back as mailbox full or
unknown user.  If I'm lucky, maybe one person will write back and
ask to be reinstated.

I really think it has to do with the availability of freebie email
addys now.  Also, people switch ISPs frequently and often use
several to access their account.  I recently signed up with a
freebie ISP only to hate it and so I deleted it from my system
quickly.  But there is still an email addy floating around that I
never used and will never see again.  I never signed up under it,
but lots of people do sign up under free email addys and then either
simply forget about them or check them long after the mailboxes are
overflowing.
