Hi Dave,

What you've mentioned is all there is to it really.

Say you have a subscription sign-up page on your site at:

http://www.foodweb.com/sub.html

When you want to use this URL in an ad put a '?' at the end followed 
by a few numbers or letters to identify exactly where you placed the 
ad (I usually just use an abbreviation of the publication name):

http://www.foodweb.com/sub.html?epub

When serving the page, your server will ignore the '?' and everything 
following it to serve the page 'sub.html' as normal.

However, in your log files it will be recorded as a distinct page 
because it has a unique URL. By reading your server logs you can see 
how many times people requested the page 'sub.html?epub' and so get a 
good idea of how well your ad is pulling.

If you don't have much experience with log files, you might be better 
off getting a dedicated ad tracking script. Wes Blaylock's "The 
Ultimate Ad Tracker" <http://www.cgitoolbox.com/cgi/uat/index.html> 
is good and costs $49. It provides easy to understand, accurate 
reports without the need for coding in your URLs.
