Hello, Deborah.  First of all, it very well
could be that this person is very un- web savvy.
Most users on webtv are.  <g>  He likely does 
not even know what ascii art is!  

Anyway, I do have one other thought on this.
If you stick with those characters which are
available on your keyboard you will have fewer
problems.  Those vertical lines might come 
through as numbers and other symbols for some
email programs.  If you do not want to cater
to those few who are using archaic email programs,
you could simply add a disclaimer that the art
might tend to show up as "gibberish" on some browsers.

I signed up for an affiliate program once, and I
was promised a virtual cup of coffee.  <g>  It was
an ascii art that came through on the welcome letter.
But underneath, or somewhere, there was a disclaimer
that said something like, "Here is your virtual cup
of coffe I promised you.  Some email readers might 
make it look funny.  Well, just remember... it's the
thought that counts."   I thought that was well done.
