Aha! What a valid point - (staying away from competitors publications).

I apply this theory whether I'm writing a book, or e-zine content. If 
you follow your competitors to closely, you'll often create a similar
publication.

But looking at publications in totally different industries, spawns
ideas that nobody has thought of in your niche. And this way,
you can't be accused of being a copycat in your own field. 

Another idea - (not sure if this has already been mentioned) -
is to look at your competitors info, and figure out what's missing.
What holes have they left open that you can fill in? When you're
finished reading, what questions are left unanswered in your
mind? 

It's a great way to fill an unmet niche.
