[epub] AOL - start ezine - what do I do? - An Egroups warning
From: "Cantu HumorMall.com" <HumorHelper@Rocketmail.com>

I started my ezines with ONElist as my list server. It
has been taken over by Egroups. It is a freebie
advertiser supported. I think it is okay to use in the
beginning till you get into the several thousands.

Here are two suggestions. I only use this format to
let people subscribe:
YOURLISTNAME-subscribe@Egroups.com
I do not use the Egroups URL. If you send a potential
subscriber to the Egroups web site, there is a
questionnaire one HAS TO fill out and you can lose
potential subscribers. By using the
YOURLISTNAME-subscribe@Egroups.com format your
subscribers bypass the questionnaire.

When I first signed on with ONElist, the agreement was
they would run text ads with my ezine. Fine. I
accepted that. But about six months ago they switched
that to html ads.

What's the difference? Two things. When it has an html
ad, it often shows up as an email with an attachment -
and you know how leery people can be of anything with
an attachment.

Also it ads a heck of a lot of K to your ezine. I did
a few tests. I sent a couple of ezine to Egroups for
distribution and cc myself. One ezine 9k in text was
22k when Egroups added the html ad. Another ezine was
18K text, 42K with html ad added.

Egroups does have a digest option. If you subscribe
to the digest version, it seems to strip the html ads
out. You can switch by email to digest version
(YOURLISTNAME-digest@Egroups) (after you have
subscribe) so I am adding new instructions to give
people a suggestion to switch to digest version - it
will only change format slightly but will keep people
from getting an Ernie with twice the K as is needed.

In naming your ezine - be careful. If you try for a
descriptive, generic name, say "Daily Joke" versus
"John Smith's Daily Joke" you might have to change it
in the future, if Egroups takes over another company.
When Egroups took over ONElist there were quite a few
ezine names that were duplicated on both lists. Now,
smaller sized ezines and newer ezines who have a
duplicate name with another larger and/or older list
are being forced to change their name if they want to
stay with Egroups.

Three of my ezines start with my name:
CantuJokesWeekly, CantuHumor (not the same as
CantuHumorStudy), and CantuHumorStudy (not the same as
CantuHumor). The only one I was nervous about was
ComedyClubDiaries and I seem to have survived the take
over with that name intact.

When I first signed on with ONLlist the agreement was
they would run text ads with my ezine. Fine. I
accepted that. But about six months ago they switched
that to html ads.

What's the difference - Two things. When it has an

However, if you subscribe to the digest version, it
seems to strip the html ads out. You can switch by
email to Digest version so I am adding new
instructions to give people a suggestion to switch to
digest version - it will change format slightly.
