[epub] Setting e-zine policy
From: "Dr.MANI Sivasubramanian, M.D." <sivaraj@giasmd01.vsnl.net.in>

Dear Fellow E-pub'ers:

Hi. I recently had a strange, yet educational experience that
I'd like to share with you - you might be in this situation someday.

I'd shifted my list to E-groups because of its simple and usually
reliable sub/unsub process. By mistake, I set the list's preferences
to ANYONE MAY POST, instead of MODERATED.

Within hours, around 45 messages had bounced around the list.
Many of them were nasty, accusing me of spreading a virus,
of stuffing their inboxes with trash, and demanding immediate
unsubscribes.

I fixed the problem, and sent out an apology. And waited for one
day.

Then sent out a strongly worded ZERO RUDENESS TOLERANCE
policy statement.

If you're interested in reading the actual statement, write to me and
I'll email it to you. But believe me, it was tough - I invited anyone
who didn't agree with it to get off the list quick, and promised that
the next person who wrote a rude note to me would get a *stinger*
in reply.

The response was overwhelming - and to my honest surprise, in
SUPPORT of my stand !

I haven't got so much feedback on any previous mail, including
surveys, polls, special offers, anything. Nearly 4% of my readers
wrote notes of encouragement within the following 12 hours,
and most condemned the rudeness they were witness to in
the messages that had bounced around the list.

Lesson: Although it pays to be a kind, considerate and tolerant
e-publisher, it is perfectly ok to hang tough on sensitive issues,
especially when other list members have had a chance to see
for themselves what the issue is.

Another lesson: If you put out quality stuff, your readers will
forgive you for mistakes - even if that means filling their mailboxes
with 50 copies of your latest ezine issue :-)

Hope this helps
