Re: [epub] The vexed solo mailings debate
another 2 cents to the fray...

I have noted a useful technique in regard to the solo mailings.

If you already have ads in your regular newsletter, your subscribers
*are* getting to see ads. But if you'd like to offer solo ads, which I
actually find quite interesting at times. I scan them to see if someone
has something that may be of interest to me and if it looks 'same ol,
same ol' I just <DELETE>. But those that didn't ask for solo mailings
or just don't want to have the extras cluttering up their box have a
very valid perspective (I feel the same with lists that always have
boring or weird solo mailings.) Here's a middle way:

What I will be doing for my site is when someone subscribes, they
actually become part of my main newsletter list 'Reporter' *and*
'Reporter-solo' which is for solo mailings. Everything looks the same
so subscribers feel like its all part of the same list, BUT they will be
offered the option (at the bottom of the email) to unsubscribe from
the solo list only. That way, they continue to get what they signed
up for, I don't punish them for not wanting extra stuff they didn't
ask for for whatever reason and, frankly, they *do* still see the
regular ads in the newsletter which is something any 'zine (print
or e) subscriber expects is part of the deal.

Solo ads certainly have valuable earning potential for us as publishers
and at the same time, we are not privy to the circumstances of each
subscriber. Many will be interested in solo mailings (especially if you
are selective in what you accept) enough to allow them to continue as
I do *just in case*. Everyone wins here and the added benefit is that
you *know* your subscribers are receptive to the solos because they
don't opt-out. And since you allow people to leave the solo-only list
and still benefit from what you origianlly offer, not only is the list
targeted,
but friendly, too.

That's worth maintaining a duplicate list, IMHO.
