RE: [epub] Email: HTML vs. Text?...
Hi Epub'ers

For all those that are trying to figure out if they should offer an HTML
newsletter or not, my advice would be to offer both if you can. Many
subscribers are still in a situation where they are not able to receive
HTML newsletters. AOL is a great example of this. Although AOL 5.0
advertises that users will be able to receive HTML mail, I have heard that
the user needs to do something to activate this feature.

When you stop to consider that nearly 1 out of every 2 emailers use AOL,
and it is not blatantly obvious as to how to receive HTML mailings in using
AOL, it will really hinder your newsletter if you do not offer both options.

With most hosting companies out there today, you will have to set up 2
different lists to accomplish offering both options, and in the long run it
is well worth it:)

Dwight made a comment that there are companies that discourage their
clients from sending HTML newsletters. I am not sure what Topica's
policies are, but I can assure you that at SparkLIST(Sparky), we do NOT do
this.

We have offered our clients the ability to send HTML mail from the start,
and will continue to do so in the future. As a matter of fact, the next
time we upgrade our software to Lyris SQL (scheduled to be released in early
fall), the software will be smart enough to determine on the fly whether or
not someone has the ability to receive HTML mail!

Hopefully, within the next 6-12 months, over 90% of all emailers will be in
a situation where they can receive HTML mail. When this happens, we will
not have to worry about offering 2 options:)
