EPUB Archives [Thread Prev][Thread Next][Thread]Re: [epub] Article Submission
Dear Dale: You raise excellent points, and I am an editor who is guilty of not responding to every article submission I receive. No, I do not have 200,000 subscribers -- but I publish two ezines three times a week to a combined subscriber base of 53,000. I have a website to maintain. I only have 20 hours per week to work while my little one is in preschool (but I probably put in 40 hours, which causes stress in my family). Answering every email was easy when I first started out. Nine months later, I am swimming in the stuff. I *delete* 1000 messages each week, much of it spam. I probably keep about 50 -- much of it articles. I am on several mailing lists to receive articles. I glance through them to see if they are on topic for my ezines and website and file them into one of 20 different topic folders for use when I need them. Because writers want to get the most exposure, they list their articles with several distributors, so I get many duplicates. The moment I see that it is a title I already have, I delete the message -- why bother reading the whole thing again? Most of the ones emailed directly from authors were already received from the services, and if there is no personal message, I delete that too. I *will* respond if I am asked a direct question and if the message is personalized for me. But if the message is addressed to "Dear Publisher" and there has been no effort to match the article topic with the focus of my publications, I'm not certain that courtesy is necessary. Otherwise, I do not contact the authors until I run the article -- I do not know if I will be running the article until I reprint it. I do make an effort to contact the authors and send them a copy of the ezines that feature their articles. Would some kind of acknowledgment that I've received each author's message be nice? Yes, and when I get around to changing my email program to one that will better autorespond to types of messages, I may do so. But right now, I find myself pressed for time -- counting down the hours between when I've dropped my daughter off at school until the time to pick her up again. I need to cut corners -- and email niceties is the area where that usually happens. I'm not proud of this. Anyway, thank you for bringing this topic up. I shall try to do better in the future.
