EPUB Archives [Thread Prev][Thread Next][Thread][epub] Article submissions to dirt word publications
Doug Green <flowers@simplegiftsfarm.com> Wrote some things > If you snail mail the *same* article to 40 print > magazines - you need your head read. You'll only do it once if -by chance - more than one editor > wants to buy first N.A. rights. You won't get a second chance with print editors unless you are very, very, very good. Cantu says, This is offered under the belief that one may want to submit articles to dirt-world publications as a promotion tool for one's ezine (I do.) Common wisdom in the publishing world: € ’±Don't submit to more than one publication at a time. Lest two editors want to buy it' Cantu's wisdom: Editors can sometimes take 3-4-5 months to reply (I am a writer with 30 years real-world experience). I don't want to tie one article up that long. As for what will one do if two editors want to buy article - what will one do if hell freezes over? One will worry about it when that day comes. One finds it hard enough to get one editor in 100 interested let alone two. I will tell you what my experiences are when that result occurs. > Single submissions - > > *If* the editor knows you - you'll always get an answer. Cantu's wisdom - If the editor knows you - you'll always get an answer assuming that the editor hasn't been fired, quit, been reassigned to another department, suffered a sudden change in personalty (all of which I have experienced) Cantu's wisdom: Regarding if you're established in the field - you'll always get an answer, I haven't a clue as to what it take to be established in a field. >On the other hand, if you're not established or known > then > > if you include a SASE, then you'll get at least an > acknowledgment Cantu's wisdom: You may or may not get a reply. It may or may not be in a week, a month, six months or a year or more ( I have gotten replies back so late, I had forgotten I wrote the original article. Thus my no longer waiting to submit one-at-a-time sequentially) Your manuscript may or may not be returned. It may or may not have writing on it in ink, coffee stains, folds or tears that make it unsuitable to submit elsewhere without re-typing) and other damage and evidence that editors do not cherish your manuscript to the degree you do. It may or may not be accompanied by some form of rejection slip formal preprinted or personalized to some degree. > if you don't include a SASE, then it depends on the magazine and the idea > you submit. Good ideas get responses, others . . . Cantu's wisdom: I no longer include a SASE because of previous observations/experiences I have written above. If the editor wants it, he/she will send acceptance letter and release forms to signed and/or check at their expense or will send check after you bill them. > > Good magazines will usually send at least a postcard or the typical form letter inside the SASE envelope. Cantu's wisdom says € ’±Good magazines' doesn't necessarily mean € ’±the biggest,' € ’±the ones with the largest budgets,' € ’±then ones who's name you recognize,' € ’±the ones you see on the magazine racks in stores' . . . € ’±Good' is a tautology and means pubs that usually send at least a postcard or the typical form letter inside the SASE envelope <SNIP> > It all depends. :-) Cantu's wisdom. I concur. It all depends. PS: I have been the editor of several small dirt world newsletters and am well aware of the lack of time and the limited budget that often keeps a well-meaning editor from being perfect in dealings with writers. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Tom Antion started his speaker's ezine in January 1999.
