oh! oh! <*hand waving madly in the air*>  I KNOW THIS ANSWER!!!  woo hoo.

After sending the first query to this list, I discovered that under 
filters you can send an auto response, AND automatically add someone to a 
specific mail list.  If someone sends an email with subject "Subscribe", 
for example, you can tell it "add to XYZ list" AND send "thankyou.txt" as 
a thank you for subscribing.

I"m trying to set it up so that people will send an email with SUBSCRIBE, 
which prompts a confirmation text file to be sent.  when they respond to 
that THEN it will add them to the list.  (It will look for "Re: subscribe"
instead of just "Subscribe" in the subject line....  the one thing I found 
is that you can't change a subject line when sending an autoresponding 
text file.

Little by little I'm working on it... I might have to document my steps 
so that others can do the same.... if there's a call for it, I suppose.
