Hello,

All of what Cathy says is true and great advice. Just to add a bit to that,
there are a handful of publishers that won't restrict authors from using
material in other ways or from selling it directly. The author doesn't
always need to go through the publisher to use material if authors have been
offered a non-exclusive contract agreement. Exclusive agreements, however,
do restrict authors from using material in other ways without going through
the publisher. Non-exclusive basically guarantees the author that while
their work is listed and sold through the publishing website, they can also
sell their work from their own website or the websites of any other
publisher who also offers a non-exclusive agreement. This is really the best
deal for the author in gaining exposure for themselves on the web. With so
many publishing websites out there it seems important for authors to be able
to place their work at as many sites as possible to receive ultimate sales
and exposure, particularly when you consider that there aren't a whole lot
of web publishers doing extensive marketing and promotions for the authors.

Secondly, when you start talking about selling work from your own website or
those of others one thing you really have to consider is how are you going
to draw traffic to your site, and does the publisher you are going with do
marketing and promotions. It's going to do you little good to place your
work with a publisher if they are just giving parking space. Unless they are
well connected, and have thousands of hits a day, and can ensure sales, then
this isn't doing you much good, particularly if you've entered into an
exclusive agreement, restricting you from selling your work anywhere else,
including your own website. In essence, exclusive e publishing agreements
are really no better than print publishing. And it is certainly possible to
gain the exposure you need for your work and yourself by marketing yourself.
It just takes a little know-how. The problem is that many authors want to
write, not market. Marketing takes a lot of time and effort - time that
could have been spent writing.

I offer authors a non-exclusive, as well as promotions and marketing of
their work, editing and author development, live author chat bookings and
events across the web authors are interested in. I place their work at other
publishing sites and try to help them meet their goals. My feeling is there
is little purpose in offering a site that does not do promotions. It's not
just a matter of offering publication of an author's work, but in my mind
you have to offer them a way of being successful and sales from their work.

And it is simply true that bringing hits and buyers to your site takes time.
You can't just put a website up and expect people to run to your site in
droves with credit cards. How are you going to get them to come. Search
engines crawl metatags, so if these aren't constructed properly, your
ranking is going to be lower. What kind of books are you offering. Web
buyers are different than traditional book store buyers. They buy how-to and
more informational titles on the average. How are you going to bring readers
to your site? And do you have the resources to invest in a merchant account
or would it be more feasible to promote your book from your site and then
place it at somewhere like Amazon.com? If Amazon would be a choice, then you
also have to be willing to invest in having CD's made, or books printed, as
they don't sell E books.

Following are a few of the publishers that offer non-exclusive agreements.
