David Hallum <dhallum@netzero.net> asked:

| Which would you want, more subscribers or advertisers?
|
| Could you also explain why?

For me, I want more subscribers FIRST... at least 3-5,000. This will put me
in range when at least a FEW advertisers might be interested in placing ads
on a regular basis.

But once I do have a good advertising base, there are a limited number of
spaces I'm willing to fill: 1 top/sponsor slot (6 lines plus 1 ALL CAPS
headline plus 1 email / URL line for contacts), 2 middle spots (6 lines) ,
and 3-5 small text ads (4-5) lines spaced out farther down. One of my
largest editions of TwoScoops was around 800 lines -- I would not want more
than 50 lines of advertising, TOTAL, in there, which works out to 1 sponsor
ad, 2 medium ads, and 5 classifieds.

As for "WHY?" ... well, it's easy... newsletters/ezines heavy-laden with
advertising are offensive and disrespectful of my readers' time. They
convey the message, "You are being used to pad my subscriber list so that I
can get more advertisers to pay me." Several newsletters I used to read
almost religiously, have become so heavy with advertising and gimmicks I
feel like the publishers are serving advertisers more than the readers; they
toss out paragraphs and snippets of stuff wrapped on every side with
advertising. I definitely do not recommend those newsletters to my readers
any more.

My content is definitely not for everyone, but I truly value my readers and
I give them plenty of "me" (which is why they continue to read my stuff,
even though I consistently piss off a few every week!*), and only recommend
products or services that have relevance to my original content. I believe
advertisers make it possible for the publisher to continue providing solid
content, but I sense that many publishers see it in reverse: more readers
make it possible to attract more advertisers, and thus more money. I can
hardly wait to have a few advertisers so that I won't be operating in the
red, but I won't rush the process at the expense of losing my relationship
with my readers.
