EPUB Archives [Thread Prev][Thread Next][Thread][epub] Re: Archives and CGI Redirects
Hi All, Answering Melissa's question on CGI redirects. I have a cgi script installed on my server that tracks my ad results. There are a lot of them out there, many available free. With the scripts, you install the program on your web hosts server, provided they give you access to a cgi bin. Then instead of putting the url that is assigned by an affilate program, you use a url you design for tracking purpose. The script I use comes with a web based control panel. I can assign a tracking code to an ad or any url. I can later go back and change where that code sends anyone clicking on that url to. For a demo of how this is used, send a blank email to my autoresponder at topten@williecrawford.com This will send you a report that I have written of some affiliate programs I have reviewed. In the review there are the following urls which direct people to various affiliate programs: http://williecrawford.com/cgi-bin/tk.cgi?cb http://williecrawford.com/cgi-bin/tk.cgi?vc http://williecrawford.com/cgi-bin/tk.cgi?warriors http://williecrawford.com/cgi-bin/tk.cgi?marty http://williecrawford.com/cgi-bin/tk.cgi?jim http://williecrawford.com/cgi-bin/tk.cgi?virt These urls all direct visitors through my domain to my affiliate links. If one of these links is bad, my 404 page would just tell them that they must have a bad link. If the owner of the affilate program decides that for some reason he wants to change who administers his affiliate program and tells me that I need to chance my links, I just log into my control panel and change the url associated with the code (following) the question mark, and all of my links using that code, anywhere - on any webpage, or in any email, are automatically sent to the proper url. Cgi Resource Center should have some of these redirect cgi-scripts that you can download for free. A friend designed the one I use and gave it to me for free. If you'd like to check it out, send me a private email and I will contact him to see if he'd be open to giving you a free copy. I am very satisfied with this script. I can log into the control panel, and view my stats from any internet connection. I can look at a summary of how many hits any code got and where they came from. This allows me to track how my ads, signature blocks, and even ezine articles are doing. I just need to assign a different code (unique url) to each campaign. Hope this made sense. I use these urls in my ezine articles and ads because I can go to my control panel and update where the link sends a person any time. This allows me to keep links in articles posted on others websites and in their archives current too. I digressed a little, but think this is useful.
