Re: [epub] Aurate - WorldMerge
Hi Mickey: you wrote:

| help and advice,

Aureate DOES have a plug in for handling subscribes/unsubscribes... but I
was disappointed to discover that it was ineffective on the UNsubs... no
matter how I set it up to filter ("UNsub" "unsubscribe" "leave" whatever)
it just wasn't catching them all. So I switched over to Pegasus and it's
hefty/beefy/industrial-strength filtering power, and I have not had a lick
of problem since! (Pegasus is 100% free, but you can buy the user manual
separately--I haven't because it is so easy).

what I do is: all my subscribe/unsubscribe forms all over my websites are
set up to send an email to my address, with a subject line and body text
that says either Subscribe or Leave.

Pegasus receives mail from my server and begins to filter:
Filter 1: read subject line and either add or remove the address from
the subscriber list
    Filter 2:  prepare autoresponder message confirming adding or removing;
puts message in queue to send
Filter 3: moves the income message to appropriate mail folder so I can
confirm the subscribes/leaves manually

You can send bulk mail or personal mail from the Pegasus distribution lists
(which can be almost as large as you want), but I've not used it for bulk
mailing yet -- haven't had time to test that part of it. I HAVE used it for
bulk mailing and it works just fine.

Just before my weekly mail-outs, I go into Aureate Group mail, delete last
week's list, import the current list, send out personalized mails. Then I
alphabetically sort this list, export it back into the Pegasus list. This
way the latest additions from the previous week are sorted, and the way they
come in daily are immediately seen clearly at the bottom and in a different
format, very easy to spot!

This works for me. Maintenance is a few minutes each day so folks get a
response the same day they subscribe or leave (although not immediate like
at eGroups), plus the time each week for the import/export process. I am
quite content with it the way I'm doing it.

Sorry for the long treatise. To answer your question, Aureate GroupMail has
a Subscriber plug in, but I'm not happy with its performance... plus, even
after I paid for the program, the Subscriber plug in STILL runs those
!()*@#&!& banner ads!!!!

(Dang... I should maybe write a manual on how to use Pegasus for
newsletters, huh? Would anyone actually pay for detailed instructions?)
