I have been researching this same topic.

Group Mail ($49) is entry level personalized bulk mailer that will work very
well for small and simple publications.  Some of the functionality is done
through free plug-ins that are semi-automatic (as in you have to tell it
when and what to do).  The documentation is sparse and plug-ins have
annoying advertisements attached.

The best, full featured and most automatic mailer I have come across is
Mailoop ($369).  It is a full featured program that will take some thought
to set up.  Mailoop does have several downloadable videos that take you
through the set up process.  The automatic subscribe and unsubscribe with
auto responders provided are a must with bigger lists.
