EPUB Archives [Thread Prev][Thread Next][Thread][epub] TV + Radio interviews
Hi Marisa, sorry for the delay getting back to you. I had a deadline to meet and didn't get back to email yesterday. Both my first TV and radio interviews were for my Second published book Writing for the World Market. I had done all the usual things like sending out press releases, media packs and review samples to local and national stations but got little response - the best was "we will keep you in mind if a space should become available." About the same time I met a retired cameraman who had worked for the BBC who was being interviewed about a travel book he had written. I did some design work for some promotional postcards he wanted to advertise his books and in return he mentioned my book and name to a researcher at the local BBC radio station. They arranged an interview for two months later based along the theme of a local writer who self-published and sold well (1400 copies in the first month) after it had been rejected by 10 large publishers. I got a 15 minute interview and was then allowed to stay in the studio and answer telephone questions from listeners. That show had an audience of about 2 million. 24 Hours after that interview I got a call from the local Cable TV channel who had heard the radio interview and wanted to make a news item for their "News Makers" section. I got 3 minutes to talk about my book with another minute of background information from the interviewer. That had a audience of about 600K. While at both interviews I enquired about whether they had seen the PR, media packs and samples I had sent out and neither recalled having seen them - despite the fact one studio assistant at the radio interview was using one of the book marks from the media pack in her notes. "Oh yeh, I didn't realise," she said when I pointed it out to her. One valuable piece of information my ex-cameraman friend gave me was that if I wanted to get interviewed again later for another book or other event is not leave contacting the stations until it came out, but to stay in contact on a regular basis. I already had a newsletter I sent out to all the stations telling them about my activities each month, but I wanted something out of the ordinary, something to keep me in direct contact with the interviewer as well as the researcher. The radio station has several talk shows with regular phone in competitions so I stated phoning in every few days. I might only get through to the presenter once a week or every other week, but he soon became familiar with my name and now asks how my books are doing every time. When I stated editing a short story and poetry magazine he quickly seized the opportunity to set up an interview. This time it lasted an hour as part of a country wide arts feature with more listener phone ins. I have now expanded on this method to phone in to every radio talk show which covers the subjects which could provide some promotion for me. Many of the regional and national TV news programs also invite emails on the subjects currently in the news. This has given me several opportunities to talk about e-books which I began producing a year ago on a computer and science program on another radio station which has led to invitations to talk about them at several schools and colleges. I hope this is the sort of information you need, Marisa.
