Hi Jane,
I agree with you.  Our newsletter is done as plain text as well.  We tend to
keep the content to a minimum in each issue and always offer our readers the
option of reading the online version.  This way, they can go to our site if
they want and, like you mentioned, the newsletter gets picked up by the
search engines.  Our website is a regional travel related online magazine
and my sister (the publisher) has had fairly good success with press
releases being printed in newspapers.  It has been great for our
subscription base.
