Got an Ezine Marketing |
EPUB Archives [Thread Prev][Thread Next][Thread]Re: [epub] Ezine exit strategies
Hi Mani - Long time no speak :-(
Well this hit a bit of a nerve, given that I have fairly recently
exited myself!
Here's my view
>>- selling your ezine itself to another publisher<<
I think the problem with that is that in a lot of cases people
subscribe to a newsletter because of the publisher, and not
necessarily the content. I don't think too many people would be
happy if they suddenly found a different person was writing to
them.
>> -selling your ezine reader list to another
publisher/advertiser <<
Could be a few privacy problems with that - for example in my
newsletter I used to say 'your name will never be divulged sold
or traded....'
>> - announcing to your readership that you'll no longer be
publishing it<<
With hindsight, that's what I should have done - extend my
subscribers the courtesy of knowing that I wouldn't be publishing
any more.
>>- just stop sending out your ezine<<
Which is what I did. Basically, my original intention was just
to take a break. But before I knew it, a week's break had become
two weeks, then a month, now over three months.
>>Which would you consider acceptable and ethical?<<
I think the first two options are probably acceptable, *provided*
that you tell your subscribers in advance and give them the
opportunity to unsubscribe if they so wish. I think an excellent
example of how to do this was when Paul took over Marty Foley's
list.... but that's what you'd expect from Paul and Marty.
The third option is just offering a common courtesy, while the
final option is probably the worst way of doing it.
>>How would you handle the process itself?<<
I think I did it badly to be honest, I should have told them I
was stopping publishing, with an explanation. Having said that, I
could have had an interesting in-box if I'd told them why I'd
stopped :-)
I'm currently working on launching an ezine and web site in a
completely different area which I'm sure that I'll find will be
much more enjoyable - watch for my sig file once it's launched
