With the passing of Listbot Gold, I too have set up my own
server with a double opt-in mechanism, that also serves to give
subscribers the choice of HTML or text editions.  I've been
running about 30% nonconfirming also.

I save all the email addresses of those that didn't confirm and
after a few days follow up with a reminder that explains the
double opt-in process and their part in it.  I make it easy to respond
each time with simple "Reply with blank" response for a default
HTML signup, and a clickable link if they want text.

I've in turn had an almost 50% response rate to the reminder.  I'd
highly recommend a follow-up!

I delete their email addresses after this reminder is sent.  I hate being
pestered and I'll not pester.  ;-)
