It happens because AOL uses a "mutant" form of HTML.  One of the "mutations" 
is that if a person types in a <  followed by an s, followed by a >  anything 
typed after that will be a strikethrough.  I can't type the exact thing here, 
or some of you will only see the words with lines through them.
