Some newbie answers:

Single opt in is one direct communication requesting subscription to your
list.  A double opt in is when you (or your list service) then requests a
confirmation of the subscription request by sending an email to the request
address and asking the person to confirm by replying to the email.

Pros and cons of each:  Single is fine IF you keep a printed copy (including
full header) of the email since that is proof, if ever required, that you're
not spamming someone.

Double is when the subscriber has to reply to the email to activate the
subscription.  It has the disadvantage that about one-third of people do not
respond to the second request which leaves the subscription status in doubt.

CPM refers to cost per thousand.  It is the basis on which many ad costs are
figured.  As an example: $5.00 CPM to advertise to a 2,000 member subscriber
list would be $10.00.

An affiliate is a person who promotes/sells a product, or series of
products, for another person for a percentage of the sales price under an
affiliate agreement arrangement.  Affiliates usually also have access to
promotional materials related to the products such as banners, ads, and
other supporting materials provided by the person who runs the affiliate
program.
