Most people probably would not click on the link if it were included in a text version. Why should they?
Also, you need to remember that most of us have subscribers who are not in countries that charge cheap flat rates for Internet service. most of the world pays by the minute. You need to make your newsletter readable offline. And if you give them a link to read something where they have to go online, chances are they won't.

I do an HTML version of one of my newsletters where I send out the HTML as an attachment. I do that for formatting purposes more than anything. I do include a few images like my logo, masthead and pictures of authors, but these do not really affect the CONTENT of the newsletter. I do not include those in the attachment, but rather use absolute links to the images folder on my web site for those who want to go online to see the images.

And, in reply to an earlier post, if you format the HTML correctly, even if the images do not show up because the reader is not online, it does not mess up the formatting of the content. what they see are empty place holders.
