[epub] home address

Women in particular should NOT list their home address on the Web.

Let me tell you a story. Some years ago I had my picture published in
Entrepreneur magazine, and among the responses was one from a gentleman
in a federal prison in Nevada. He kept on writing to me, even going so
far as to label his letters "Attorney/Client Communication" so they
would not be read by the warden. Since I did not have the faintest idea
what he was in for or what his sentence was, I didn't feel safe
complaining to the prison about his increasingly disturbing letters. It
took months for the letters to stop coming, and after I had not heard
from him in more than two years, I received a letter from a buddy of his
in the same prison who said he'd gotten my name from the first man! By
that time, I'd already tossed out the original letters, figuring I would
never need them as evidence.

Now in this case my business address was a P.O. box, and my home
telephone number was unlisted, but imagine how much more frightening
this all would have been if my business address had been my home
address. Unless he went to an immense amount of trouble, he would not
have been able to show up at my home. The best he could probably have
done was to stake out the post office and wait until I went there to
pick up my mail.

One never knows who will latch on to your picture or your name or
whatever. Your husband has the right idea. A P.O. box is the safe
alternative.
