Ummm... There's a serious factual error in this paragraph. SpamCop doesn't accuse anyone of anything. It is a tool used by others to report alleged instances of abuse.

Yes, it's occasionally used maliciously, but Julian has nothing to do with that. It's most often used improperly by people who want to do something about the problem, but don't bother reading or following the instructions given at the site for its proper usage. Also not Julian's fault.

I don't like SpamCop much at all, but let's keep to the facts. SpamCop is a tool, just like SpamKiller and the other point-and-gripe software that's been written in the past. It has the same flaws as all of them - inclusion of capabilities that appeal to frustrated and uninformed/underinformed users. These users think that reporting to everyone on the planet makes it more likely that they'll get results.

With SpamCop there is one difference. Julian can remove, will remove, and has removed users who misuse his software. If he finds out about it.

That's not possible with software like SpamKiller. You really don't want to put people in the position where that's the main tool for reporting. Believe me, you don't. It's worse than SpamCop ever dreamed of being.

As for the article you pointed us to, I read it. While "arresting" the "Internet's gestapo" may have a certain emotional appeal to those who don't understand the issues involved, the article itself was sufficiently full of holes, bad logic, critical omissions and poor analogies, that it shouldn't be
promoted as anything but an example of how NOT to report news. Not to mention extremely sloppy grammar.

Nice flair for the dramatic, though.
