I don't mind solo ads all that much because most lists are run as a
business. My pet peeve are list owners who don't treat their lists as a
business and begin sending "other" items to the list.

Here is a sample of what I send to the list owner right after I remove myself.

-----
I did not join your mailing list to receive ANYTHING other than business
related ((or whatever type of list it is)) correspondence. You have
violated the proper rules of maintaining a mailing list by sending
unrelated material. SPAM by any other name is still SPAM.
-----

I remove myself from any mailing list which violates its purpose. If a
joke list starts mailing political messages, I unsubscribe. If a political
mailing list starts sending recipes, I unsubscribe. A gardening list
starts sending prayer requests, I unsubscribe. Not necessarily because the
message offends me or my beliefs but because the list owner committed
fraud. I agreed to receive email for a certain purpose. If I am getting
something I did not request, the list owner is telling me that he does not
respect me or his business (since most lists are businesses at heart). I
do not wish to associate with such organizations or companies.

I always try to let the list owner know why I decided to leave. (Just like
I would complain to any business.) Out of all my letters to list owners,
the only ones to lash out and tell me I am wrong are the ones who chose to
send some sort of religious message. All the rest thanked me for letting me
know what they had done wrong - and the majority of them agreed with me.
(That they had lost sight of the list's true purpose but would not do so
again.)

It bothers me when a publisher sees nothing wrong with sending email that
do not fit the purpose of this list -- the REASON I granted permission to
email me in the first place.
