Hi.  I've used PDF as the format for my ebooks for over five years
now.  My strategy is to place the PDF file in a password protected
section of my website and then display the username/password
combination to buyers after their online order is processed.

I have used two services for this:

I-Bill - http://www.ibill.com
This is available only for products, not services.  They offer online
check facilities too.  The set up process is slightly complicated,
but is more versatile, esp if you are offering memberships needing
periodic billing cycles.

ClickBank - http://www.clickbank.com
The set up fee is $49.95, but after this the process is quite
simple to set up and flexible to use for different price points.
I'm not sure if periodic billing is possible.  It also allows you
to reject credit card payments from certain geographic regions
based on a risk of credit card fraud.  No online check feature.

You might also want to look at PayPal for this purpose, I think
the new modifications let you accept payment for products and
services.

Hope this helps.  The major benefit from such a system is that
the whole process can be automated, and your intervention is
only required in troubleshooting the inevitable problem with
occasional download difficulties.
