Nice post, Mark.  And as always, a lot of very valid points made.
Thanks for the insight, I've learned something of value from it.

I wasn't considering the possibility of automatically adding responders
to the list.  I do this step manually myself, so assumed everyone would
too.  My mistake :)

Absolutely.  My experience has been that double opt in is more
responsive, but when I went the single opt in route early on
in my e-publishing experience, the list I built was indeed
responsive.  I did spend a lot of time handling unsub requests,
though, and have found this number has come down lately.
The downside is that the growth rate of my ezines is slower.

Mark, I'm interested in any ideas you have to determine this
percentage.  How, if at all, can you measure the fraction of
single opt-ins who might not confirm their membership,
yet are interested in your publication?  And then, how does
>one determine the value of this group to the ezine's bottom line?
