That is technique I haven't heard before! :)

In my experience, subscribers are notoriously bad
about not reading instructions and are liable to try to
use the address as is. Of course, that would result in a
bounced email and a subscriber who may just get
frustrated and leave your list.

Well, it didn't keep it from being harvested...
it probably was harvested under the domain NOSPAMwhatever.com.
Of course that domain would not exist and the harvester
would remove the address after the bounces started coming
in. (if that is how harvesters work... I don't suppose selling
bad addresses is much more of a stretch for a spammer)
