[epub] Re: In response to "Tombo" and the benefits of Spamcop

system. I wish it would go away, but how?<<

One thing you could do that might reduce some of it is to use one of the
features available in Sendmail (always assuming that you have a dedicated
server and that you use Sendmail).

The feature is called Spam Control (access). What it lets you do is set up
specific email addresses or domains and then reject them so the mail never
hits your inbox.

You can either set it up to 'reject' - in which case the sender gets an
'undeliverable' email back - or 'discard silently' in which case you don't
get the mail and they are none the wiser.

I've got a number of these controls set up, primarily for domains that I've
found send me nothing but spam (generally speaking they are some of the free
email providers that don't seem to care about user abuse). Occasionally I'll
have people trying to send me a legitimate email using one of the free
domains I've blocked, but I work on the basis that if they really want to
talk to me they'll try again using a 'proper' email address.

I know this isn't going to solve all your problems, but it may help a
little.

Another thing you could consider is not having a 'catch-all' function on
your server. By which I mean not having a setting whereby mail addressed to
*any name* at your domain gets through, instead just set up specific
controls for actual names you use.

For example, sending an email to david@emgroup.com will get to me, but
sending one to nobody@emgroup.com will not.

Again , it's not foolproof but at least it helps a little.

>>Ask around, look around - SpamCop itself is guilty of malfeasance (that's
a > word Elena taught me : - ))) <<

Excellent word! - I'll have to look it up and see if I'm also guilty of
 it myself :-))
