[epub] Re: In response to "Tombo" and the benefits of Spamcop
Hi All,

As a list moderator myself, I agree that maintaining a certain decorum is
important. I'm stunned that issues of Spam inevitably reach flame status for
one reason or another. I've participated in a couple of spam-specific
discussion lists and have seen all the arguments from every possible angle. I
dropped off both of those spam lists because it ALWAYS turns ugly. The
position one takes seems to be something that is hard-coded into our genes and
elicits the fight or flight response. Fighting dominates.

I have observed and talked with numerous folks taking potshots here and over
years online and have great respect for several for their insight and
integrity. What fascinates me is how and why spam discussions always take
eventually to the low road of flaming and name-calling. I've seen it happen at
web conferences, in chat sessions and discussion forums. Even corporate
professionals and managers get hot under the collar when talk turns to spam.

I've suffered at the hands of spamcop, even though I am a privacy advocate.
It's inevitable for publishers to be accused of spamming. My ISP and multiple
list hosts know that I operate each of my three current lists with integrity
and deal immediately with all spam complaints -- so they don't impulsively cut
my services when someone complains or submits a claim through spamcop. At some
point publishers become known by spamcop in the same way. Reason usually
prevails.

Privacy issues often lead to heated debates as well. If anyone would like to
discuss those matters of privacy and security in a level headed way, I invite
you to bring your spam discussions to the I-Privacy discussion list. No
name-calling allowed. ;-)
