The script I mentioned in an earlier post - Will Bontrager's
Master E-responder - does what you mention.  I use it to
deliver 4 different mini-courses ( between 5 and 7 lessons),
two ezines (one is a daily, the other is a monthly ezine) and
as a smart follow-up autoresponder to stay in touch regularly
with my customers.

The sign up form can be linked to the autoresponder so that
the new subscriber can automatically start receiving the
first message in the course.  If you desire a double-opt in
process, all you need to do is set up the sign up form to
deliver a message to a separate autoresponder which then
asks for a confirmation message to be sent to another
email address, which will be the sign-up address for
the ezine/course.

In addition, you are allowed to include an unsubscribe
link at the end of each message in the sequence, which the
subscriber can use to remove him/herself from the
list automatically.

And E-responder allows multiple autoresponders to be
set up, and pre-programmed with follow up messages
upto a year in advance.

In addition to the ease-of-use, what attracts me most
to this system is that it can be automated to the fullest
extent and is very flexible and customizable.

I'm not technically competent to address the various
objections other participants have raised about such
a server based autoresponder system, but can only
say that over the 3 month period I've been using it,
it outperforms any of the similar scripts I've used in
the past - on many counts.  I strongly recommend it
for a similar use.
