Whenever someone protests like the spam accuser did, it is usually for
one reason. You have offended a basal belief that this person holds. 
Basal beliefs are the same beliefs that the general population holds. But 
in some people, these beliefs are so deeply-held that they assume the
same significance as the holder's basal metabolism.

Where I come from, people tell innocuous one-liners to each other all
the time. A remark like: "Yo' mama so ugly, her face could raise a 
blood blister on a plow point" would usually not provoke anyone to 
anger. But if the person hold beliefs about motherhood at the basal 
level, a brutal fight could breakout.

People with basal beliefs are hard to spot, especially the males. They
usually tell their spouse, or more often their mothers: "Mom, buy me a 
couple six packs of Bud at the supermarket".  Women of this stripe
usually have crude tattoos with one or more misspelled words.
