For those asking the question:

Blog - weB LOG. Basically like writing a journal on the Internet, so 
they tend to be very personal in their style, published on the web and 
don't have a publishing schedule per se.

In publishing terms the blogs that I have seen have been more like 
columns than newsletters / ezines in their own right. I would see them 
as being a part of the mix that a publisher might deploy rather than 
being the basis of something in its own right.

And Mike, I don't think serious publishers will abandon their 
newsletters for blogs. There is a lot of management value in having 
style guides, publishing processes, editorial guidelines, schedules 
etc, etc, etc that those who take publishing more seriously will want 
to exploit. However, I could see value in a publication with columnists 
asking them to contribute to blogs in order to develop that side of the 
brand.

As a writer I can see the value in having this kind of fluidity for my 
writing. My only concern would be that without a firm publishing 
schedule per se I may become more lazy. Knowing I have to write x 
features by y date focuses the mind. Publishing a feature "when I get 
round to it" seems a little less professional. That said, now I'm 
dipping my toes back into sci-fi and fiction again maybe it would be a 
good way of testing the water?!?!
