No offense to either you or your friend, but you can't *really* do anything 
as a single user.

The only protection there is in all reality is to block access from the 
hosts used to send data towards the server / network in question. This is 
done higher up in the network topology, in the routers.

If you look at sites and also IRC networks that got ddos:ed, such as 
DALnet, where Tiscali shut off their IRC-server due to these MASSIVE 
attacks, you will see that it's not "simple". Tiscali is one of the biggest 
isps in europe and it threatened the customers of their network; then 
you'll realize the magnitude of these attacks.
