Denise,

I'd suggest a nice, heartfelt letter that sets out why the newsletter 
went on the back burner for a while. Also tell them a preview copy is 
coming in the next couple of days and they'll be invited to rejoin the 
mailing list (don't include opt-in / out at this point). Follow this up 
with the preview and opt-in instruction within a couple of days. Maybe 
aim for Monday / Thursday in terms of timing.


Why?


You're starting to rebuild a relationship from scratch. The intro 
letter warms the pitch a little bit and prepares people for the message 
that comes through. The opt-in says to them "is it OK if I talk to you 
again?"

Don't be disheartened by the responses you get. You may find only 1 in 
25 or 30 people says "yes, come back in to my inbox." Think of this as 
a bonus and start pushing out to capture the hearts and minds of new 
subscribers.
