My ezine, Unlimited Potential, started out as a single opt-in. I went

I love these ones!

One of my clients runs an adult mailing list, which is great fun for getting "hey, I didn't ask for this" messages.

In the script I gave him to manage subscribers it records the TCP/IP address of the person accessing the script and the page they called it from. I used this for managing information about hot pages and to trap the odd moron who thinks it is great fun to add 20 eMail addys in one go!

Anyway, my client uses it to counter the "this is spam" messages that get thrown at him. He replies that on x date at y time person with TCP/IP address xyz put in their details and joined the mailing list, having first viewed page abc which is about jkl. I've seen a couple of the replies he gets, usually along the lines of "sorry, I forgot" or "someone else must have used my eMail address" (which I think is code for "my wife/boss accesses this computer")!!!!

More seriously we also used it to counter an attempt to get a Yahoo! address he has shut down by going back through the logs, tracking down the TCP/IP address of the person claiming abuse and showing how many times they'd visited the site and when they'd click on that "subscribe button."

I don't like spammers as much as the next man, but when someone tries their best to run a legit biz in an ethical way then I figure being able to prove how carefully they manage their business is important. Two small bits of information that are so easy to capture can make the difference, my experience tells me, between being labelled as a spammer and being able to correct a misunderstanding.

Ross ;-))
