I realize this is a heretical idea :) but...
perhaps the problem is that you are attempting to *market*. Even though 
you bill this as an ANTI-marketing system, you still *market*.

And, I think ezine readers are really weary of being marketed to. And why 
not? Hundreds, thousands of emails, DAILY, trying to sell me something!

And as a side note: when we begin to expect certain behavior from others, 
(ie "Shouldn't list owners first forge a *relationship* with their 
lists...") we end up disappointed.
