[epub] How to launch a newsletter?

Hello all,

I have been publishing a newsletter for about three years. It is not 
successful in terms of growing numbers of subscribers but is successful in terms of 
few unsubscribes and positive feedback. To be honest, I never did much of 
anything to promote it. Even after three years, I consider myself a newbie. Yeah, 
yeah, I sigh at myself all the time. 

Now I am getting ready to launch a second newsletter which has a wider target 
audience and will be easier to promote. I hope. (There is that, isn't 
there???!)

I would be most appreciative of any advice about how to make this new venture 
more successful, but at rock-bottom costs. Which mail service is a good one? 
Free or very inexpensive is what I'm looking for - but not Topica. Is Yahoo 
groups any better? Are listings in ezine directories useful if paid promotion is 
not purchased? What are good ways to get listed in search engines? Is a 
website necessary if the only purpose, initially anyway, is to subscribe to the 
newsletter? How does one go about finding appropriate message boards as a means 
of getting the message out? What are the best ways to promote and advertise?

Any information, opinions, and advice you care to share about any topic that 
has to do with the basics (or beyond) of starting a newsletter will be most 
appreciated.

You might be asking, "What the heck is this person doing trying to start an 
ezine?" Trust me, I ask myself the same thing every day. Nevertheless, I'm 
still gonna give it a shot. See? Constant sighs from all quarters.
