With that in mind you really want as a high a  
percentage of subscribers to be interested enough in your list to open it
and  read 
it... not just subscribe to it or 'be' subscribed to it because they  
expressed a vague interest in whatever subject at some stage on some site
and  then 
eventually found themselves subscribed to 50 lists on that subject that
they 
don't read.

Many people subscribe to lists just to get the "Free gift" for subscribing.
They aren't the least bit interested in your newsletter. Some unsubscribe
after downloading their freebie, and others just delete it without reading
it as it comes. That really isn't much different than the people who
expressed that vague interest, then never read the newsletter. Is it?
